A scholarly or peer reviewed journal has these characteristics:

  • in-depth research articles
  • usually includes an abstract
  • the authors are experts in their field and their credentials are included       
  • sometimes tables, graphs, charts or equations are present 
  • there are extensive bibliographies
  • the purpose is to provide information about, report, or present original research or experiments
