Search Tools

What are Search Tools?

"Search tools" are used to combine keywords and keyword phrases in catalogs  & databases.

The most common search tools are:

  • AND - returns results that contain both keywords (effects AND caffeine AND children)
  • OR - returns results containing either of the terms; OR is useful when searching with synonyms (effects OR consequences)

  • NOT - use NOT to exclude a word or phrase

  • Use quotation marks to create a keyword phrase

How do I Use the Search Tools?

Use Search Tools to combine your keywords and phrases. 

  1. Children AND Behavior AND Caffeine

  2. Caffeine OR Soft drinks

  3. Use quotation marks for keyword phrases: 
    "attention deficit disorder"

        4.  Children NOT Adolescents
