Why Is ALICE called ALICE?
Before on-line catalogs came along there were oak card catalogs. These catalogs had LOTS of drawers filled with information on how to locate a book.
The early Internet was not as user-friendly as it is now. To make these new computerized catalogs less intimidating the on-line catalogs were given names.
It was thought this would make them seem friendlier to people familiar with the old Card Catalogs.
Here are a few examples:
U. of Colorado...Chinook
Agnes Scott College...Sophia
Ohio University's ALICE is named after the character, Alice, in Alice in Wonderland.
